Hot and cold crayon art

To create these beautiful pieces of art, you will need the following supplies.
  • crayons (broken or whole)
  • two 12x12 canvases
  • a hairdryer
  • liquid glue (Elmer's works great) or a hot glue gun
  • glitter (optional)
  • newspaper or other scrap paper
  • stand (easel or chair)
  • paint brush

The next step you will have to do is "shell" the crayons. For each of my canvases I picked out a color theme. All blue and green colored crayons were used for the "cold" canvas. All red, yellow, orange, pink, and white crayons were used to make the "hot" canvas.  Rip off all their wrappers. Just to be Eco-friendly, broken crayons work just as well!

After that, you will need to get out your canvas. For the hot canvas, line up all your warm colored crayons in a row. If you have broken pieces that are the same color, stack them up. Try to alternate the colors. If some of the the crayons or stacks of crayons are taller than another, don't worry! It will turn out the same in the end.

After lining up the crayons, pour a bit of liquid glue on top of the crayons. Very carefully smear the glue around with a paintbrush until all of the crayons are covered. Wait until they are dry. If you would like to speed up the process there is another way. You can glue each crayon piece down with a hot glue gun. This takes awhile and is not nearly as fun! It also doesn't stick as well to the crayons as the liquid glue does.

After the glue dries, it should look like this.

Next, cover your stand with newspaper (i used a chair in this case). Set up the canvas with the glued on crayons on top of the paper.

After that, plug in your hair dryer and set the settings to as hot as they can go. Slowly blow it over the crayons. When the crayons start to have a glossy look it means they're melting.

Melt the crayons until most of the wax drips to the bottom of the canvas.

When most of the wax has dripped down, lay the canvas down on a flat surface. carefully blow just the crayons with the hairdryer. This sort of melts the crayons together, giving it a finished look.

This step is optional. Right after melting the crayons, you can sprinkle a little glitter over the canvas. I like a little bling in my art.

After that, you will have to repeat this entire process over on the other canvas using "cool" colored crayons to create the cold canvas. Together these pieces of art look beautiful.
